I consider think myself to really be relatively well educated in the most up-to-date era of social networking site games just like Mafia Wars, Vampire Wars, and such. Problem or Not? We take a responsible look at Computer Game Addiction

 

Family bonding has been found by research to be a positive advantage flowing from the presence of computer games in the home.  Other benefits that have been supported by research are that parents have found their children frequently exhibit improved hand-eye co-ordination and manual motor functions, enhanced memory, opportunities for learning and cognitive exercise, stress relief,  relaxation and improved self-confidence. Any Nintendo Wii-owning families can add a comprehensive physical workout to that list!

According to his research, author of several in-depth studies into online gaming and gambling addiction Psychologist Professor Mark Griffiths, has stated that for the majority of gamers, excessive playing is not a problem.

He did say however that: “It does seem to be the case that online gaming addiction for a small minority is a real phenomenon and people suffer the same symptoms as traditional addictions.” {“But the good news is that it is a small minority.”}

Professor Griffiths adds that “MMORPGs – Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games – are the types of games that completely engross the player. They are not games that you can play for 20 minutes and stop. “If you are going to take it seriously, you have to spend time doing it,” he said.

Professor Griffith and his team conducted an in-depth survey of 540 gamers and found that four players; that is just under 0.75%, were playing an excessive 80 hours or more a week. OK, so do you need to be concerned about addiction? Professor Griffiths warned there was a difference between “healthy enthusiasm” and “unhealthy addiction.” People who sacrificed jobs, partners and loved ones were considered “extreme players” and most likely to be at risk of affecting their health.

He advised anyone worried about gaming addictions should contact their doctor and get referred to a psychologist.

Computer game addiction can be defined as “excessive or compulsive use of computer and video games that interferes with daily life”. Compulsive computer gaming is receiving greater recognition as a condition requiring treatment with a growing tally of headline cases appearing. Simply saying that online gaming has become popular is a massive understatement. It had been popular for a while, but in the past couple of years its popularity has reached previously unheralded heights. It’s not just the number of gamers that has been increasing either, it’s the number of games and gaming websites too. Type ‘online games’ into Google and you’ll see that there are more than 200 million results!

So, why is it that online gaming consistently rises in popularity? Ever improving technology is one reason, increasingly impressive graphics is a second, and more interactability is a third.

It seems like a lifetime ago now that Pong, Pac-Man and Frogger were the leading lights of the gaming world, but in actual fact it was just a decade or two ago. In the world of technology though, that is more than a lifetime, it’s an entirely different era! Now though, technology and programming languages are at a level whereby the imagination is the only limitation, and this has shown itself in the great games that are consistently released.

As for graphics, slow moving, uninspiring blotches that jerked across the screen have been made a thing of the past. Today with the modern technology that is out there, some of the three dimensional games that are being offered online actually more closely resemble a movie than a game. The graphic capability with Flash and Java Scripting and AJAX programming allow a near photo-realism. This is especially true if you are lucky enough to have an extremely high-speed connection like a T1 or a T3 line.

Online games are about more than just pretty looking graphics though, they are about having fun, and to have fun a games needs to be interactive and rewarding. This is where modern online games have really proven themselves. Multi-player games that pitch you against limitless amounts of opponents from around the globe are now the standard. No more playing against yourself, or a against a poor AI computer opponent. Internet connections are now at the point where you can play almost anyone, from anywhere, at the same speed as you could do if you were playing your friend on a split screen in your front room.

So, what does the future hold for online gaming?
