When the system gets so hot internal components, particularly the X-clamps, start to bend and flex and put extreme stress on the motherboard and GPU. When enough stress is applied to the motherboard, the brittle solder joints will start to break and crack. These broken solder joints, in turn, cause the Xbox 360 to start flashing a trouble code: the red ring of doom.

What you’re doing when you wrap a towel around your Xbox 360 is super-heating the console in order to re-melt the cracked or broken solder joints on the motherboard.

The ironic thing is that this usually works in the short run, so you can play your Xbox 360. But don’t be fooled, the long-term effects are detrimental and can destroy your Xbox 360 over time.
