PostHeaderIcon How To Fix Your Xbox 360 When It Has 3 Red Lights Flashing – Is The Towel Trick Bad?

I have helped many people fix Xbox 360 3 red lights over the past few years. However the most common question I hear is “can you Fix Xbox 360 3 Red Lights with a towel”?

In this short article I’m going to talk about the so-called towel fix, why it isn’t actually a fix it all, and how it can literally destroy your Xbox 360 console permanently.

Before we begin, lets talk about what the towel fix actually is. The towel fix is when you take a large towel and wrap it around your console and then turn your Xbox 360 on for about 20 minutes. Some gamers will tell you this fixes the red ring of death. While it may stop this problem in the short run, it will not last very long, and it can end up damaging the internal hardware of your console.

The theory around the towel fix is quite simple. You see, the main problem behind the red ring of death is that the Xbox 360 too hot. When the system gets so hot internal components, particularly the X-clamps, start to bend and flex and put extreme stress on the motherboard and GPU. When enough stress is applied to the motherboard, the brittle solder joints will start to break and crack. These broken solder joints, in turn, cause the Xbox 360 to start flashing a trouble code: the red ring of doom.

What you’re doing when you wrap a towel around your Xbox 360 is super-heating the console in order to re-melt the cracked or broken solder joints on the motherboard.

The ironic thing is that this usually works in the short run, so you can play your Xbox 360. But don’t be fooled, the long-term effects are detrimental and can destroy your Xbox 360 over time.

Just think about it, your Xbox 360 is actually getting hot enough to melt metal inside. Not only will it melt broken solder joint,s but it can melt good parts that aren’t damaged and cause them to become damaged, rendering your Xbox 360 broken.

Are There Other Ways to Fix Xbox 360 3 Red Lights?

I’m glad you asked. There are a couple of different ways that you can correctly fix this frequent problem.

One suggestion is to check and see if your warranty is still intact and Microsoft will actually refurbish your Xbox 360 system free of charge. This is great, but like I said, they usually just replace the system with a refurbished model and there have been reports of people getting flashing red lights even after sending their consoles off the Microsoft.

If your console is not under warranty, however, Microsoft will charge you a pretty steep repair fee.

Luckily, there are some other alternatives that you can take to fix Xbox 360 3 red lights. One technique, that is gaining popularity, is the do it yourself Xbox 360 repair. I encourage you to check this technique out. Not only is it safe, but experts agree that it is actually a much more permanent fix than Microsoft’s own system repair–and definitely better than wrapping a towel around your very expensive piece of computer hardware.
